KUCHING: Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Fadillah Yusuf has urged the people, especially those living along Sungai Sarawak, to do their part in the conservation of the river. This is because the river, he said, acts as the ‘soul’ of the city which gives life to Kuching Waterfront and at the same time warms the hearts of tourists, enabling them to experience the wondrous city.
“Cleanliness comes from ourselves, everyone has to safeguard S.H.E which stands for a Safe-Healthy-Environment friendly city,” said Fadillah during the Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri at Kampung Kudei Baru yesterday.
He also said without a clean environment, people are susceptible to negative influences such as crimes.
Fadillah, who is the member of parliament for Petra Jaya, also urged the people to cooperate with Kuching City North Commission (DBKU) to sustain the city’s green pastures, safe environment and harmonious lifestyles.
He also hoped that DBKU together with all the villages under its jurisdiction would organise more events to foster closer ties among themselves.
“Such gatherings will create a bond and fellowship among the people to stay united,” he said.
He also said close bonds was important to face the challenges brought by globalisation.
“It is getting competitive in studies, business and getting jobs.
“Therefore it is important that we upgrade ourselves to remain relevant in the fast paced globalised world,” he advised.
Meanwhile, the event also saw Fadillah handing out prizes to winners of the Bertuntung, Karaoke and cooking competitions.
The event was organised by PBB Women wing, Kejiranan Mesra Kampung Kudei Baru, DBKU, PBB Satok branch, PBB Youth, village committee and Saberkas unit of Kampung Kudei.
Also present during the event was DBKU mayor Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai and senator Dayang Madinah Tun Abang Haji Openg.
