Bio-Borneo now an annual event — Fadillah

Borneo Post February 26, 2012, Sunday
KUCHING: The inaugural Bio-Borneo, a programme aimed at further exploring the bioeconomy of Borneo, will now be an annual event, said Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof yesterday.
Speaking at its opening yesterday, he reasoned that such programme would provide a proper platform to transform the bioeconomic opportunity into something that could benefit the country and the people.
“Bio-Borneo 2012 reflects the focus of the country to further develop biological resources-based industry or bioeconomy.
“Bioeconomy is the continuity to National Biotechnology Policy in line with the economic transformation strategy. More than 210 companies have gained the status of BioNexus with total approved investment of RM2 billion, since the implementation of the policy.”
The Petra Jaya MP revealed that Bio-Borneo 2013, co-organised by Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation (BiotechCorp) and Sabah Development Authority (Sedia), would be held in Kota Kinabalu.
“Hopefully, Sarawak can hold the 2014 Bio-Borneo. I do hope that local biotechnology players, researchers and the public can utilise the event to enhance your network with international players and explore new investing and reinventing opportunity in the biotechnology industry.”
The opening ceremony was officiated at by Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud who launched a regulatory guidebook entitled ‘EU and US Pharmaceutical Regulations: A Guide for Malaysian Companies’.
He also witnessed the exchange of three Memorandum of Understandings between National Institutes of Biotechnology, Malaysia and Universitas Tanjungpura, Pontianak; BiotechCorp and Craun Research Sdn Bhd and; Bee Forty One Agrotech Sdn Bhd and Dewan Usahawan Bumiputera Sarawak, Samarahan Branch. The three-day Bio-Borneo 2012 which ends today is themed Accelerating Innovation of the Borneo Bioeconomy.
It was part of the year long programme in conjunction with the National Science and Innovation Movement 2012 and the Bioeconomy Initiative Malaysia launched last Nov by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
The programme is co-organised by Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti), Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC), BiotechCorp, Malaysian Genome Institute and Malaysian Biotechnology Information Centre.
Its main objective is to establish a platform for sharing high-impact innovation and technology to drive the bioeconomy in the region. It is also aimed at developing networking and creating opportunities for collaboration and partnership between research institutes and the industry and to increase awareness among the public, students and practitioners towards the potential of biotechnology and biodiversity.
There were 40 booths exhibiting biotech research and development products from government agencies, government departments, research institutes, universities and private sector.
The organiser prepared a programme for students, MyBio@School including competitions, DNA extraction demonstration, dolly and biotech board games, career talks and giant dice game.
The public could also participate in the MyBio Carnival and learn how to make soap, identify essential oils and DNA extraction.

Fadillah: Sarawak BN will win

SANTUBONG: The State Barisan Nasional (BN), anchored by Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), should give a clear message to the opposition that they (BN) are still a strong government and will retain the majority seats in the upcoming 13th general election.

Petra Jaya MP Datuk Fadillah Yusof, who is also the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, said it was important for the state BN to have a strong majority win in order that development plans would go on smoothly.

“The opposition will do whatever they can to reduce the BN majority in the state by giving empty promises to the people.

“They may use ways to manipulate the people to go against the government. We should not take this matter lightly.

They will target the leaders, starting from the Prime Minister down to our Chief Minister Fadillah was speaking during a ceremony to set up the election committee for his constituency of Petra Jaya, at One Hotel Santubong here recently.

He added that the people are now more aware of BN’s development plan and know how to differentiate between genuine and fake parties.

“As voters, I believe they will not be easily fooled by empty promises from the opposition,” he said.

Meanwhile, PBB Deputy President Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman, together with the MPs for Semariang and Satok, wanted Fadillah to be retained as the BN candidate for Petra Jaya this coming general election.

“After serving for two terms, I strongly feel that Fadillah have never had any problems in meeting the people or listening to their problems,” he said.

About 300 PBB members from N6 Tupong attended the two-day ceremony.

Posted on January 28, 2012, Saturday

State Barisan Nasional accepts

Bipartisan approval

theborneopost.com. Posted on December 21, 2011, Wednesday

Datuk Fadillah Yusof
KUCHING: BN, opposition unanimous in approving use of indelible ink in next polls.
The state Barisan Nasional (BN) accepts with open arms the decision made by the Election Commission (EC) to use indelible ink for voters in the next general election.
State BN Youth chief Datuk Fadillah Yusof said though he had reservation about the new ruling, he concurred with the EC saying, “It was a decision made by a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) and was agreed upon by both sides of the political divide.”
He said that the new system did not mean that the present system was faulty; giving an advantage to the BN to win past elections.
“The results of past elections were based on the decision of the voters. If the EC has been the tool of the BN government as alleged by the opposition, then the BN would have won all past elections 100 per cent.
“And if the EC is a tool of the BN, then why is the opposition able to win in Penang, Selangor, Perak, Kedah and Kelantan in the last general election,” Fadillah said when contacted yesterday.
Fadillah, who is also Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, said his ministry had actually recommended the biometric voter verification system but it was turned down by the PSC.
PRS president Tan Sri Dr James Masing said the use of indelible ink would “beat the people who know how to cheat”.
“It will improve the present system in tandem with the need of the time,” he said.
State Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) chief Baru Bian said the use of indelible ink was timely to ensure fairness in the election process.
“With the new method, the opposition has a higher chance of winning in the coming general election,” said Baru, who is also Ba Kelalan assemblyman.
State EC director Datu Takun Suggah, meanwhile, said that they would be training 31 returning officers for the 31 parliamentary seats in the state some time in February next year to ensure they were well-versed in the new method.
Returning officers must also be aware that the respective candidates would no longer be allowed to withdraw or object after the nomination period.
On Monday, EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Yusof announced that all voters, except postal voters, would be required to have their fingers marked with indelible ink when voting in the next general election.
He also said the commission had agreed to several recommendations made by the PSC on electoral reforms, and the use of indelible ink was one of them.
Abdul Aziz said the ink, which contains silver nitrate, had been identified and sent to various departments for further testing to ensure it was safe.
These include the Chemistry Department, Department of Islamic Development (Jakim), National Fatwa Council and the Health Ministry.
“We want to make sure the ink is not removable, and will stay on a person’s finger for at least a few days,” Abdul Aziz told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.
He added that the ink would not affect the religious practices of Muslim voters as it has been used for Muslims in some countries.
Abdul Aziz said that after the indelible ink requirement was implemented, there would not be any need for a biometric voter verification system.
He said the use of the ink should prevent multiple voting.
The EC had planned to use indelible ink in the 2008 general election and had spent RM2.4mil buying the ink but cancelled the move at the last minute, citing public order and security issues.
The use of indelible ink has also been a key demand of the Bersih coalition for electoral reforms.
In the next general election, all military personnel and members of the General Operations Force, as well as their spouses, and the police force will vote two to three days before polling day.

BN mempunyai mekanisme memilih calon pilihan raya

Borneo Post December 19, 2011, Monday
